A youth football coach in Belfast has been handed a permanent ban after sharing a message described as a 'cocaine menu' in a group chat used to coordinate children's football matches.
Disgusting Message in Team Chat
The incident occurred within the Fonacab Development League, which is for children aged eight and under. The coach sent the message, which featured a list of prices for various quantities of cocaine, into a league-wide WhatsApp group. This platform was routinely used by coaches for practical communication, such as confirming match timings and player availability for their young teams.
Upon discovering the post, league officials acted swiftly, labelling the message as "disgusting". A spokesperson confirmed that the individual was removed straight away from their coaching position.
Immediate Action and League Response
The league's response was unequivocal. Not only was the coach immediately dismissed, but their club and child protection officers were also informed without delay. The spokesperson stated, "The coach is now not welcome at any of the Fonacab League venues and this is non-negotiable for us."
In a subsequent statement issued on social media, the league acknowledged that it cannot monitor every message between coaches. However, it reinforced its commitment to high standards, saying, "We do have clear expectations of behaviour, and any conduct that breaches safeguarding or professionalism will be addressed immediately. Our responsibility is to protect the wellbeing of every child and uphold the values the League is built on."
Safeguarding at the Forefront
This case highlights the critical importance of safeguarding in youth sports. The immediate and decisive action taken by the Fonacab Development League demonstrates a zero-tolerance policy towards behaviour that jeopardises the safety and appropriate environment expected for children. The permanent ban ensures the individual cannot return to a coaching role within this league, prioritising the welfare of its young players above all else.
