Five Newcastle players facing January exit if plans change
Five Newcastle stars facing January exit if plans change

Newcastle United may have to sell players in the January transfer window to fund new signings, with five first-team stars potentially in the shop window. The Magpies have failed to score in their last two Premier League home matches and are looking to add reinforcements, but any deals early in 2027 could impact summer spending.

Why Newcastle may need to sell

The club's promising start under Matthias Jaissle has stalled, and with a large squad, there is scope for moving players on to keep revenue streams balanced. Any January moves will come at a cost, with deals having an impact on what could happen in the summer window.

Here are five players who could be moved on to raise funds.

Joe Willock and Nick Pope

Joe Willock has been involved in every game this season and has three goals, but doubts remain over his long-term future. Besiktas have openly declared their desire to bring him to Turkey, and with his contract up at the end of the season, the time has come to make a decision. Willock will be free to talk to clubs soon, so if United want a transfer fee, they will have to sell in January.

Nick Pope could have left in the summer, but no suitable offers arrived. Like Willock, his contract is up next summer, so the only factor Newcastle could rely on is any club wanting to get ahead of the queue. A small fee paid in January could secure his services ahead of a potential bun fight for his signature.

Anthony Elanga and Jacob Murphy

Anthony Elanga has seen his form dip after a promising start under Jaissle. Newcastle paid a lot of money for the Swede but have seen little return on their investment so far. It is perhaps unlikely that the club will look to unload him in January, but he must know he needs to justify his place in the coming months.

Jacob Murphy was the subject of late transfer interest from Nottingham Forest in the summer, which Newcastle turned down. If they are looking to raise funds in January, they may think twice in future. Murphy is second choice to Elanga, and although capable of the type of cross which led to Will Osula's goal at Palace, it is seen less and less.

Yoane Wissa

Yoane Wissa has only four goals for the Magpies, two in the Premier League, and has seen his form dip after a promising start. Newcastle paid £55m to Brentford for the No 9 back in 2025, but there is little notion of recouping much of that fee. It may be time for Newcastle to cash in before his value drops any further.

Newcastle need a goalscorer, and if they must fund a new arrival by moving players on, they may have to be brave and lose another forward player. Whether anyone will cough up what United will accept is another matter.
