Michael Carrick has confirmed that Luke Shaw and Fred are doubts for Manchester United's Premier League match against Chelsea on Sunday. Shaw missed the midweek Champions League win over Villarreal after suffering concussion for the second consecutive game, while Fred twisted his ankle in the same match but played the full 90 minutes.
Carrick, who is set to lead United for the last time at Stamford Bridge, also provided updates on other absentees. Edinson Cavani has missed the last two games with a tendon injury, while Paul Pogba (thigh) and Raphael Varane (hamstring) remain sidelined.
The caretaker manager was unable to clarify details of Ralf Rangnick's imminent appointment as interim manager or his own future at the club. Rangnick has agreed a six-month deal until the end of May, with a consultancy role to follow, but will not be in charge for the Chelsea fixture.
United have lost five of their last seven Premier League games, and Carrick will be the 14th different manager to make his Premier League debut against Chelsea. Only Duncan Ferguson has won such a fixture, with 10 of the previous 13 losing.
