Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on goalkeeper Senne Lammens, suggesting the Belgian could be the club's first-choice shot-stopper for the next decade. The 23-year-old, who arrived from Belgium for a reported £18.2 million, has become a regular fixture in the starting XI since his debut against Sunderland on October 30.
Impressive Performances
Lammens has featured 30 times across all competitions this season. He delivered a crucial performance in the recent goalless draw at the Stadium of Light, thwarting Noah Sadiki in the first half and producing a sharp save to deny Brian Brobbey after the break. Ferdinand lauded the youngster's composure under pressure.
"The calmness that he's brought, the amount of saves that he's made and the difference-making that he's made with this team, I don't think you can put a number on that," Ferdinand told his podcast. "He's been superb and he's young. That's what I love about him, he's young, he's still going to be getting more experiences and he's only going to get better from now on."
A Cool Head
Ferdinand emphasized Lammens' level-headed nature: "I don't think it matters how good or bad he plays, I think he'll be the same level - very level-headed and he won't get out of his pram too much about anything. I think he's one for the next 10 years at Manchester United, he's going to be the No.1. He's someone again, got a definite great foundation to start building from what he's shown this season."
Financial Impact
The signing has proven to be a bargain, with Lammens' performances saving the club millions compared to acquiring an established star. His consistent displays have solidified the goalkeeping position without the need for a costly replacement.
Team Outlook
United drew a rare blank against Sunderland, failing to score for the first time under interim manager Michael Carrick. The Reds only threatened late on through Matheus Cunha. However, Ferdinand remains unconcerned about the attack: "We can't expect perfection everywhere. Sunderland have caused havoc for a lot of teams at the Stadium of Light. To expect we're going to go there and dismantle them is disrespectful to Sunderland and expecting too much of Manchester United for where we are."
Carrick's side has already secured Champions League football and sits just one point away from guaranteeing third place. A higher finish would bring significant financial rewards ahead of the summer transfer window.
