Football Fan Faces Prison for Racist Abuse of Marcus Rashford in Spain
A Real Oviedo supporter is potentially facing a 15-month prison sentence after being accused of directing a racist slur at Marcus Rashford during a La Liga match. The incident, which occurred last September, has sparked legal proceedings under Spanish hate crime laws.
Incident Details and Viral Footage
The abuse took place at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium on September 25, 2025, when Rashford, on loan from Manchester United to Barcelona, was playing against Oviedo. A 19-year-old home fan allegedly shouted a Spanish version of the N-word as the England international prepared to take a corner.
The racist remark was captured on video by a spectator and shared widely on social media, amassing nearly 29 million views in under 24 hours. This rapid spread brought significant public attention to the case, highlighting ongoing issues of racism in football.
Legal Charges and Prosecution Demands
Prosecutors are treating the case as a crime against dignity on racist grounds under Article 510.2.a and 510.5 of the Spanish Criminal Code, combined with an offence against moral integrity under Article 173.1. They argue the slur was clearly heard by other fans and intended to target Rashford based on his skin colour, causing him frustration, shame, and humiliation.
Beyond the requested custodial sentence, legal authorities are demanding:
- A fine of €2,880 (approximately £2,500)
- A four-year ban from employment in teaching, sports, or leisure sectors
- Disqualification from passive suffrage
- €2,000 (around £1,738) in compensation for moral damages
Even if the court convicts only on the moral integrity charge, prosecutors are still pursuing the same 15-month jail term and a stadium exclusion exceeding five years for fixtures organised by La Liga, the RFEF, UEFA, and FIFA.
Investigation and Broader Context
The National Police identified the supporter using stadium security footage, leading to legal action for hate crimes in sports. This case is not isolated; Spanish media reports indicate the Asturias Prosecutor's Office has filed another case against a different Oviedo supporter for racist abuse aimed at Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé during a match on August 24, 2025.
Rashford has since returned to action for Barcelona following a knee injury, coming off the bench in a 4-1 win over Villarreal at the end of last month. Barcelona currently leads La Liga, four points ahead of Real Madrid, with their next match scheduled against Athletic Club.
The incident underscores persistent challenges with racism in football, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and penalties to deter such behaviour in the future.
