Millions of residents in the UK have been urged by Thames Water to refrain from using hosepipes as a record-breaking May heatwave continues to grip the southeast of the country. The water company has reported a significant surge in demand, with some areas experiencing up to a 50 per cent increase in water usage compared to normal levels.
Record-Breaking Temperatures
Temperatures soared to as high as 35.1C in Kew Gardens, shattering previous May records across 163 weather stations nationwide. The heat is expected to persist on Saturday, with forecasts predicting temperatures reaching up to 30C in parts of the country, including London.
Water Conservation Advice
Thames Water has advised customers to adopt water-saving measures, such as using watering cans instead of hosepipes, reusing water where possible, and postponing non-essential tasks like car washing. The company emphasised the importance of conserving water during this period of extreme demand.
The heatwave has placed unprecedented strain on water supplies, prompting the call for immediate action to ensure adequate water availability for all. Residents are encouraged to follow the guidelines to help mitigate the impact of the dry spell.
