Chelsea Manager Liam Rosenior Outlines Hurdles for Enzo Fernandez's Return
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez will remain absent from the squad for this weekend's Premier League clash against Manchester City, as manager Liam Rosenior insists there are still "a few obstacles" to overcome before the player can be reintegrated. Fernandez is serving a two-match suspension imposed by the club following his remarks during the recent international break, which cast doubt on his future at Stamford Bridge and expressed admiration for living in Spain.
Punishment Upheld Despite Apologies
Rosenior has confirmed that Fernandez will not feature in Sunday's high-stakes encounter at the Etihad Stadium, upholding the original disciplinary decision. The Chelsea captain was previously omitted from the FA Cup victory over Port Vale, and his return has been delayed as the manager and player work through lingering issues. In a pre-match press conference, Rosenior revealed that he has held multiple discussions with Fernandez, who has apologised to both the manager and the club.
"I had a really good chat with Enzo, three or four with him, he's apologised to me and the club," Rosenior stated. "We'll deal with that after a massive game on Sunday. It's a serious meeting about something serious. I'm not questioning his character or who he is as a person but I believe people make mistakes and you can't overstep the punishment for the mistake."
Agent Intervenes to Mend Relations
The situation escalated when Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, publicly criticised Chelsea for sanctioning his client. However, Pastore has since engaged in bridge-building efforts with the club's hierarchy, aiming to resolve the conflict. He clarified that Fernandez's comments were misinterpreted by the media, emphasising that there is no intention for the player to leave Chelsea.
"He’s the captain, one of the team’s leaders, and he’s shown his best form on the pitch this season. He was simply talking about a city," Pastore explained at a FedEx event in Paris. "Then there were a lot of interviews in a short period where he talked about his future. The media mixed things up and started saying he was going to leave Chelsea. There’s absolutely nothing to it. We’re on the same page with Chelsea. We made peace yesterday and the day before between Chelsea and the player. There were never really any problems. We cleared the air."
Rosenior's Firm Stance on Discipline
Rosenior initially addressed the issue by stating that Fernandez had "crossed the line" with his remarks, leading to the immediate suspension. The manager reiterated that while he holds no personal grudge against the Argentina international, the disciplinary action was necessary to uphold club standards.
"I spoke with Enzo. As part of the football club, he won't be available for tomorrow or Manchester City. It's disappointing to speak in that way. As a character and person, I have no bad words. But a line was crossed. We had to make a sanction," Rosenior affirmed.
When questioned about the timeline for Fernandez's return to first-team action, Rosenior remained cautious, indicating that further steps are required. "There's a few obstacles we still need to get through but I won't go into that," he added, leaving the situation unresolved ahead of the crucial match against Manchester City.
The absence of Fernandez, a key leader and performer for Chelsea this season, poses a significant challenge for the team as they prepare to face the reigning champions. Supporters and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the club manages this internal dispute and whether Fernandez can swiftly overcome these hurdles to contribute on the pitch once more.
