Enzo Fernandez Issues Apology to Chelsea Amid Real Madrid Controversy
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has formally apologised to the club and head coach Liam Rosenior following comments made during an international break interview that appeared to court interest from Real Madrid. However, the Argentina international will continue to serve an internal two-match suspension, ruling him out of Sunday's Premier League showdown with Manchester City.
Rosenior Confirms Suspension and Ongoing Issues
Liam Rosenior has upheld the ban imposed on Fernandez, stating that while the player has expressed remorse, there are still "few hurdles" to overcome before the situation is fully resolved. The Chelsea coach emphasised that the decision was not about questioning Fernandez's character but upholding the club's values.
"I had three or four conversations with Enzo," Rosenior revealed. "He's apologised to me, he's apologised to the club, and we'll deal with that after a massive game on Sunday. It's a serious meeting about something very serious that Enzo has said."
Impact on Chelsea's Season and Team Dynamics
Fernandez missed last weekend's 7-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Port Vale and will also be absent for the crucial match against title-chasing Manchester City. Rosenior dismissed suggestions that omitting the World Cup winner was self-sabotage, asserting that football is a team sport focused on collective strength.
"There are certain values and cultures that I believe in, that this club believes in, that makes the team stronger if you get that right," he said.
Chelsea's Champions League Quest and Injury Updates
Sixth-placed Chelsea are aiming to revive their Champions League qualification hopes after securing only five points from their last six league matches. With five English teams guaranteed spots in next season's competition, the Blues trail fifth-placed Liverpool by a single point.
In other news, Rosenior provided updates on injured players:
- Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, and Levi Colwill are progressing in their recoveries but will not feature against Manchester City.
- Winger Jamie Gittens remains sidelined.
Despite the setbacks, Rosenior expressed confidence in his squad's depth and focus on the upcoming fixtures.
