England staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to beat Sweden 4-2 on penalties and secure a place in the Euro 2025 semi-finals. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton emerged as the heroine, saving two spot-kicks as the Lionesses extended their record of reaching the last four in six consecutive major tournaments.
Sweden had dominated the first half, with Kosovare Asllani scoring in the second minute and Stina Blackstenius doubling the lead in the 25th minute. England struggled, particularly on the left side where Jess Carter was exposed. The defending champions went into the break shell-shocked and trailing 2-0.
Sarina Wiegman's side improved after the interval but could not find a breakthrough until the 79th minute, when Lucy Bronze headed in a cross from substitute Chloe Kelly. Just 102 seconds later, Beth Mead nodded home another Kelly cross to level the scores and force extra time.
The shootout saw Sweden miss three of their five penalties, with Hampton saving from Filippa Angeldal and Hanna Bennison, while Sweden's captains also struck the post. England scored all four of their spot-kicks to seal a famous victory and keep their Euro 2025 hopes alive.
