England Do Just Enough as Russo Seals Women’s World Cup Qualifying Win Over Iceland

Alessia Russo followed up her superb assist against Spain with the only goal in Reykjavík, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory for England over Iceland in a Women’s World Cup 2027 qualifier. The win, set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, ensured the Lionesses maintained a three-point gap over Spain at the top of Group A3, keeping them on track for an automatic qualification spot.

Hampton's Heroics Preserve Slender Lead

England manager Sarina Wiegman praised the performance of goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, whose critical stops in the second half proved decisive as Iceland pushed for an equaliser. "It is always a team effort, but it’s really nice to have a goalkeeper that stops the ball going in – especially when it’s really hard for the team," Wiegman said. "She showed again that she is a world-class goalkeeper."

Speaking to ITV, Hampton downplayed her role, stating: "It’s my job, isn’t it, really? We are in it as a team. I can’t be the one scoring goals but I can stop them. We win as a team and that is what we pride ourselves on."

Russo's Clinical Finish Breaks Icelandic Resistance

The goal came in the first half after a rare breach in Iceland’s disciplined defence. Lauren Hemp raced through on the break and found Russo to her right, with the Arsenal striker collecting the ball, swivelling, and placing a low effort past goalkeeper Cecilía Rúnarsdóttir into the far corner. This marked Russo’s third goal in the qualifying campaign, highlighting her electric form after she also provided a stylish assist against Spain and scored twice against Ukraine in the previous international break.

England's Dominance Tested in Second Half

Despite accumulating over 70% possession and 34 touches in the opposition box in the first half, England struggled to extend their lead. Iceland began the second half on the front foot, forcing a scrappier game and threatening to spoil England’s perfect record in the campaign. Hampton’s saves were crucial in preserving the slender advantage, sparing England’s blushes after their impressive win over Spain earlier in the week.

Qualifying Context and Group Standings

Only the four League A teams who top their groups will avoid playoffs and qualify automatically for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. With European and world champions England and Spain drawn in the same group, one team faces potential frustration and extra games. This victory makes England’s win over Spain even more valuable, as anything less would have eroded their three-point advantage.

Wiegman Reflects on Mixed Performance

Wiegman acknowledged the team’s struggles in the second half, saying: "Today, if you only consider the second half, it wasn’t so beautiful from our side, but it was very important." She emphasised focusing on the process while highlighting the significance of the win, which came in the Lionesses’ 500th game.

Other Women's World Cup Qualifying Results

  • Wales kept themselves joint-top of Group B1 with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Albania, thanks to a Rhiannon Roberts goal.
  • Northern Ireland completed a double over Malta, winning 4-2 with two goals from Ellie Mason in Group B2.
  • Scotland battled to a goalless draw with Belgium to remain top of Group B4, with goalkeeper Sandy MacIver in fine form.

England’s next qualifier is against Spain in Mallorca in June, a match that could prove pivotal in the race for automatic World Cup qualification.
