Brahim Diaz was left in tears after his disastrous Panenka-style penalty cost Morocco a first Africa Cup of Nations title in 50 years during a chaotic final against Senegal. The Real Madrid midfielder won a contentious spot-kick deep into second-half stoppage time with the match goalless, but his weak effort was easily saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
The penalty was awarded after a VAR review, prompting Senegal to stage a 16-minute walk-off protest, with manager Pape Thiaw ordering his players back to the dressing room. They were eventually persuaded to return by talisman Sadio Mane, but Diaz's composure appeared to have been affected by the delay and Mendy's persistent talking.
With the game forced into extra time, Pape Sarr scored a stunning winner for Senegal in the 94th minute, denying the tournament hosts their first Afcon crown since 1976. Diaz, substituted early in extra time, was seen in tears at full-time and looked dejected as he received the golden boot award from FIFA president Gianni Infantino for his five goals.
Morocco manager Walid Regragui said: 'He had a lot of time before taking the penalty which must have disturbed him. But we can't change what happened. That is how he chose to take the penalty. We need to look forwards now.' Mendy declined to reveal his exchange with Diaz, stating: 'What did we say to each other? That's between us.'
Nigeria legend John Obi Mikel expressed concern for Diaz, telling E4: 'To do that it spoils everything Brahim Diaz has done well in this tournament. He is going to be devastated. This is going to be tough on him, for weeks, for months. Just put your foot through it.'
