Dewsbury-Hall shines as Everton beat Newcastle again

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall produced a standout display as Everton secured a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park, with Thierno Barry scoring the decisive goal four minutes into the second half.

Barry had a challenging first half, struggling to get the better of Dan Burn, but he responded by scoring his eighth goal of the season in all competitions. Only Erling Haaland, with 13, has more among Premier League forwards.

Dewsbury-Hall outshines £48m signing

Dewsbury-Hall was the best player on the pitch, outpacing Nico Gonzalez, who joined Newcastle for £48m in the summer. His clever pass behind the Newcastle backline created the opening for Barry's goal.

The 28-year-old could have had an assist earlier when he set up Harrison Armstrong, but the youngster fired over with the last kick of the half. Barry ensured Dewsbury-Hall ended the game with an assist.

"I'm not here to go through the motions," Dewsbury-Hall said post-match. "I want to push for something. I'm in the prime years of my career and I want to look back on my career and say I did something big for a massive football club."

Defensive solidity continues

Everton's backline looked more solid with Jake O'Brien back at right-back. The win marked their 20th clean sheet since David Moyes returned in January 2025, with only Arsenal (31) and Manchester City (28) keeping more in that period.

Jordan Pickford was called into action five minutes from time, blocking a low effort from substitute Yoane Wissa. Anthony Elanga thought he had equalised, but his effort hit the post before Vitalii Mykolenko cleared.

Hackney left waiting

Hayden Hackney was left on the bench despite impressing against Newcastle on Thursday night, with Moyes opting for the midfield trio of James Garner, Harrison Armstrong and Dewsbury-Hall. Hackney came on in stoppage time but remains patient for his chance.
