Chelsea took the lead after 77 seconds when Morgan Rogers volleyed home from the edge of the area, marking the first goal Arsenal have conceded this season. Rogers had been chased by Arsenal over the summer before joining Chelsea for £117m.
Arsenal's ferocious response
Arsenal's reaction was ferocious, with intense pressure culminating in Kai Havertz's equaliser on 25 minutes. The home side created a staggering number of openings before the goal, with Chelsea defenders blocking shots and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez making several saves, including denying Bukayo Saka and keeping out a Gabriel Magalhães effort.
Arsenal had a goal disallowed when Ezri Konsa was found offside after Riccardo Calafiori lashed home the rebound. Chelsea also hit the post through Pedro Neto just before the interval.
Ødegaard's decisive strike
Arsenal took the lead shortly after the restart when Ødegaard started and finished a move, with Havertz's dummy freezing Wesley Fofana and allowing the captain to finish from a Christos Tzolis low ball.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, with substitute Estêvão forcing a save from David Raya on 89 minutes, but Arsenal held on to secure the win.
