Troy Deeney has cast doubt on Manchester United's chances of securing a Champions League place next season, pointing to the increased fixture load and questions over Bruno Fernandes' consistency.
Manchester United enjoyed a strong revival under Michael Carrick after he took charge in January, winning 12 of their final 17 Premier League games to finish third. However, that run came without European competition, as United were eliminated early from both domestic cups, meaning they only had league matches from January onwards.
Concerns over fixture congestion
Deeney, speaking on talkSPORT, argued that Carrick has yet to prove he can manage a busy schedule at the highest level: I don't think they'll make the Champions League places right now. The reason is we don't know what Carrick's like with three games in a week at this level. Obviously, we saw a bit of Championship, but not at this level.
He added: Now, having to look at the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cups, Carabao Cups, you can't go out as early as you have done in previous years. There's an expectation now to do more. Bruno Fernandes, do you really think he's going to have the season he had last season again this season? I just think that with the squad currently constructed as is, I don't think there's enough depth to get through all of those competitions, which I think will ultimately leave them short.
United have prioritised midfield reinforcements this summer, adding Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos to address concerns in that area.
Deeney's top-four forecast
Deeney backed Arsenal to retain the title, with Manchester City again finishing second. He tipped Liverpool, under new management, for third place, and predicted Xabi Alonso would guide Chelsea back into the top four after a disappointing campaign.
