Bryson DeChambeau's LIV Golf Future Hangs in the Balance
Bryson DeChambeau, the American golfer who has been the face of LIV Golf since its launch in 2022, now faces an uncertain future with the rebel circuit. His commitment has been thrown into question following his public frustration over a major format change that he claims he "didn't sign up for". This development comes as his contract with LIV Golf is set to expire after the 2026 season, leaving his prospects beyond this summer shrouded in doubt.
Contract Expiry and League Instability
DeChambeau's deal with LIV Golf is due to run out following the 2026 season, which has sparked widespread speculation about his next moves. The uncertainty is compounded by recent rumours regarding the league's own future. There are growing concerns that LIV Golf could lose its substantial financial backing from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF). If this happens, the league may no longer be able to afford the mammoth salaries that initially lured top stars like DeChambeau away from the PGA Tour.
The departure of other high-profile players, such as Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed, in recent months has only fuelled suggestions that DeChambeau might follow suit. These exits have highlighted the struggling nature of the tour, adding to the pressure on its remaining marquee names.
Format Change Sparks Outrage
In February, DeChambeau openly criticised a significant format change introduced by LIV Golf, which has further clouded his future with the league. LIV Golf announced at the end of last year that tournaments would transition from 54 holes to 72 holes starting in 2026. This move was seen as a strategic effort to gain recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking, but it also marked the end of one of the league's most distinctive features.
DeChambeau expressed his displeasure in an interview with Today’s Golfer, stating, "We didn't sign up to play for 72. It's definitely changed away from what we had initially been told it was going to be. So there is some movement that we’ve all been, I would say, interested in, and going, 'Why that movement?' Because we were told it was going to be this. So that’s definitely made us have some different thoughts about it."
Recent Incidents Add to Tensions
DeChambeau's frustrations appear to have boiled over recently during the sixth LIV event of the season in Mexico City. At Club de Golf Chapultepec, he lost his temper after his ball landed in a section of rough with minimal grass coverage. In footage captured by Perisgolf, he complained to onlookers, "You got destroyed grass. Oh, this is rough? Definitely good to see," while giving an ironic thumbs-up. He later told an official, "You've got to have a rule here. It's unbelievable, absolutely out of the question."
Notably, LIV Golf executives were absent from the Mexico City event, reportedly summoned to a meeting in New York regarding a "seismic" announcement. This meeting is believed to be connected to concerns about the potential withdrawal of Saudi Arabian backing, adding another layer of instability to the league's operations.
Performance and Broader Context
Before the Mexico event, DeChambeau failed to make the cut at the Masters earlier this month, recording a triple-bogey on the 18th hole on Friday. This performance setback may have contributed to his mounting frustrations. With five individual LIV Golf victories to his name, DeChambeau has been a key figure for the league, but his recent comments and actions suggest growing tensions.
The combination of contract expiry, format disagreements, and league instability paints a precarious picture for DeChambeau's future in LIV Golf. As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on whether he re-signs or seeks opportunities elsewhere, potentially marking a significant shift in the golfing landscape.
