David Pleat Returns Home After Hospital Stay Following Heavy Fall
David Pleat has returned home to continue his recovery after spending two weeks in hospital following a worrying fall. The former Tottenham Hotspur manager was permitted to leave hospital on Thursday after receiving medical care for injuries sustained during a fall at Loftus Road on January 24.
Football Legend's Health Scare
Pleat, who celebrated his 81st birthday just nine days before the incident, suffered a heavy fall while attending the Queens Park Rangers versus Wrexham match. The football veteran has been involved in the sport for over six decades, beginning his professional career with Nottingham Forest in 1962.
During his extensive career, Pleat managed Tottenham Hotspur during the 1986-87 season and later served three separate spells as interim head coach throughout the 2000s. More recently, he had taken up a scouting role with Celtic at the age of 80, demonstrating his enduring passion for the game.
Outpouring of Support from Football Community
Following reports of his hospital stay, numerous figures from the football world took to social media to express their support and well-wishes. Claude Littner, former Tottenham chief executive and Lord Sugar's former right-hand man on The Apprentice, described Pleat as a "super human being" with "encyclopedic knowledge of players and football matters."
Another social media user recalled Pleat's iconic run across the Luton pitch in his distinctive John Motson coat, highlighting his memorable contributions to football culture. The widespread support underscores Pleat's reputation as one of football's most likeable and knowledgeable figures.
Pleat's Enduring Football Legacy
Throughout his career, Pleat has served in various capacities including manager, scout, and director of football. He first took on the director of football role under former Spurs owner Alan Sugar in 1998 and has been credited with several significant signings including Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen, and Ben Davies.
In a recent interview, Pleat expressed frustration with modern football's increasing reliance on data analytics, stating: "I was called in and informed: 'It's all data driven now we don't need eyes and ears'. What nonsense. Data is all well and good when it enhances eyes and ears, not replaces them." Despite being relieved of his scouting duties at Tottenham at the end of the 2024-25 season, Pleat remains passionate about the sport, declaring himself "a total obsessive" when it comes to football.
Recovery Amid Tottenham Turmoil
Pleat's return home coincides with a challenging period for his former club, Tottenham Hotspur. The club recently sacked manager Thomas Frank following a disappointing run of Premier League results that has left them languishing in 16th position. This comes after the departure of Ange Postecoglou last summer, with the team failing to show significant improvement under Frank's leadership.
As Pleat continues his recovery at home, the football community remains united in wishing the veteran figure a speedy and complete return to health. His six-decade contribution to the sport, spanning management, scouting, and directorial roles, has cemented his status as a respected and beloved figure in English football.
