A fundraising campaign by Manchester City fans to support a 12-year-old Arsenal supporter who was punched after Sunday's match has nearly reached its target. Emerson Butler was attacked as he left the Etihad Stadium with his father following the 2-2 draw.
Greater Manchester Police are investigating the 'unprovoked' assault. The boy's father, Mr Butler, said the physical injuries, including bruising to the nose, are less concerning than the psychological impact, as Emerson cannot stop replaying the incident in his head.
The attack occurred when a group of middle-aged City fans engaged Emerson in conversation. After he commented that the draw was fair, one man punched him in the face, causing bleeding from his nose and mouth. Mr Butler noted that his son, though almost 6ft tall, is clearly a child, and the assailant had looked at him before striking.
In response, City fans set up a fundraising page to invite Emerson back for 'a proper Manchester City welcome', which has raised £895 of its £1,000 target. The club has also offered him a VIP trip for the return fixture next year. Mr Butler expressed gratitude for the 'amazing' support, which has helped Emerson see the attack as a one-off.
