Cunha jokes about wife on live TV after Man Utd win

Matheus Cunha left a CBS Sports studio in hysterics with a cheeky comment about his wife after scoring twice in Manchester United's 3-2 comeback victory over Roma at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian forward spearheaded the fightback for Michael Carrick's side, who trailed 2-0 within the opening 20 minutes. Cunha netted twice in quick succession late in the second half, with his second goal coming four minutes after his first, to seal a dramatic triumph.

A Celebration That Cost Him

After scoring his second goal, Cunha ripped off his shirt while sprinting towards the home supporters. The celebration earned him a yellow card, and a second booking in stoppage time led to a red card, leaving United a man down for the closing moments.

Despite the dismissal, the striker was in buoyant mood after the match. He sat down with Jamie Carragher, Kate Scott, Micah Richards and Thierry Henry on CBS Sports, where the conversation turned to his celebration and his physical condition.

The Comment That Stunned the Studio

Richards asked Cunha: "You're in good shape, eh? You been going to the gym?" Taken aback, Cunha replied: "Yeah, I did. Thank you, thank you. My wife needs me to be good!"

The remark triggered loud laughter across the studio. Carragher's laugh echoed around the set, while Richards collapsed face-first onto the desk in fits of giggles and had to breathe deeply to regain his composure as Scott stepped in to continue the interview.

Cunha has been married to Gabriela since May 2024. The couple met in Brazil, where Gabriela was studying law. She regularly attends his matches and was at Old Trafford to watch his heroics.

Passion Behind the Celebration

Before the comment about his wife, Cunha had spoken at length about the passion behind his celebration. He said: "I think this is too much Brazilian, no? I think I always dreamed of having this celebration, to be honest. When I went, I saw the fans.

"It was a bit tricky because it (the winning goal) was in front of the Roma fans' section. Then I don't know if it's Roma fans or our fans, and then I felt like if I jump, 'Oh my God, it will be tricky!' But yeah, I'm happy because they celebrated me and it was a very beautiful moment."

Before wrapping up the chat, Cunha discussed what lies ahead for United following their fightback. He said: "I think we need to change, no? After this hard moment, we tried everything and nothing more than a night like today. Champions League and with a comeback, as we did.

"I think the second half was a real Manchester United team, with all the passion, all the duels - everything you can show on the pitch. I think we need to do more and more of these kinds of things, and I hope this will be a beautiful comeback for this season."
