Cunha brace seals stunning Man Utd comeback win over Roma

Matheus Cunha's dramatic late brace sealed a sensational 3-2 comeback win for Manchester United over Roma at Old Trafford, with the result potentially saving Michael Carrick's job. Trailing 2-0 at half-time, United rallied to claim their first victory in 10 games.

Disastrous Start Leaves United Two Down

United conceded twice within the opening 17 minutes, with Matias Soule scoring his first Champions League goal and former Aston Villa forward Donyell Malen doubling Roma's lead from the penalty spot after Ayden Heaven blocked a goalbound shot with his arm outstretched. A loose pass from Kobbie Mainoo in midfield and Diogo Dalot's advanced position left space that Roma exploited for the opener.

Before kick-off, fans released green and gold balloons in the Stretford End and chanted anti-Glazer and Sir Jim Ratcliffe messages. Twenty minutes into the game, with the side 2-0 down, supporters threw tennis balls onto the pitch during a break in play, with Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo removing the projectiles as anti-ownership songs resumed.

Second-Half Rally and Penalty Drama

United emerged from the break with renewed energy. Cunha was fouled inside the box, and Bruno Fernandes stepped up 10 minutes into the second half, only for Roma's debutant third-choice goalkeeper Devis Vasquez to save his effort. However, Fernandes was allowed a retake due to encroachment by a defender and made no mistake second time.

The goal sparked United into life. Mbeumo ran through on goal moments later but struck both posts, while Harry Maguire proved a handful from corners as the hosts began to resemble a team for the first time in the night.

Cunha Completes Turnaround

Cunha pounced on an error from the Roma defence to finish from six yards, then fired inside the near post in the 86th minute to put United 3-2 up. He celebrated by taking off his shirt and jumping into the stands.

However, Cunha received a second yellow card for a needless tackle in added time. Despite going down to 10 men, United held on for the win, sparking emotional scenes of celebration and relief.
