Crystal Palace Fans Clash in Strasbourg Amid Racism Claims

Violence erupted between rival groups of Crystal Palace supporters before their Conference League match against Strasbourg last week, with footage showing bottles and chairs being thrown in a city square. The clashes, described by the club as involving a 'tiny minority', have brought to light a long-running feud and allegations of racism within the fanbase.

The trouble is understood to stem from tensions between the Holmesdale Fanatics (HF), an ultras group known for their vocal support, and a loosely organised collection of fans who have been accused of singing pro-Tommy Robinson songs and displaying 'Stop the boats' flags at previous away games. The HF claim they have faced a sustained campaign of racial abuse from this rival group over several years.

According to sources, the violence began when an HF member was attacked without warning in Strasbourg. Further incidents occurred at the stadium, including an alleged assault on another HF member in the toilets. A supporter on a Palace message board reported being told by a young HF member: 'How would you feel if you watch Palace and get called a P*ki?'

Crystal Palace have not confirmed the racism allegations, stating that no club staff witnessed such abuse in Strasbourg. However, the club is aware of the claims and is compiling evidence from the trip. They have promised to punish any supporters involved in the violence, with one fan already banned for misconduct during a recent match against Manchester United.

Palace, based in a diverse area of London, have a strong anti-racism stance, with a supporters' charter recommending a 10-year ban for a first racist offence. The club will liaise with Irish police ahead of their next Conference League game against Shelbourne in Dublin, where further trouble is feared.
