Coventry City have been crowned champions of the EFL Championship, capping off a stunning season that has already seen them secure promotion to the Premier League after a near three-decade absence. The Sky Blues sealed their return to the top flight last week with a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers, and their emphatic 5-1 victory over Portsmouth at the CBS Arena on Tuesday evening rubber-stamped the trophy with two games still remaining in the campaign.
A Stunning Season Culminates in Glory
This title victory rounds off an incredible campaign for the Midlands side, who have led the Championship table for the majority of the season under the guidance of manager Frank Lampard. With matches against Wrexham and Watford left to play, Coventry could potentially finish the season on an impressive 95 points, highlighting their dominance throughout the year.
Lampard Honoured as Manager of the Season
Frank Lampard's exceptional leadership has been recognised with the EFL Championship Manager of the Season award. Speaking at the awards ceremony, the Chelsea icon expressed his emotions about the team's achievements. "I was emotional the other night [securing promotion at Blackburn] because it dawned on me in that moment what we had achieved," Lampard said.
He continued: "A club that I walked into 16 months ago that had gone to the depths and back up, and football is always about people and always about supporters and I'd missed it. You have to credit Mark Robins [previous head coach] for what he did at the club, the owner Doug King and appreciate the moment, and I'm working with a great group of players."
Lampard emphasised the importance of team spirit, stating: "When you walk into a group forget the football talent, that's obviously important but when they look after themselves, they train well, they support each other, they have a laugh, that's the gold. It's an incredible story and I'm pleased to be a part of it."
Looking Ahead to Premier League Challenges
When asked about the prospect of playing Premier League football next season, Lampard acknowledged the significant challenges ahead. "There's a lot of work to do because we know the step that it will be for the football club," he said. "So that's something we have to work on quickly now because of where we're at, we have to be ambitious -- we're Coventry City football club."
He added: "I know what the Premier League is and its going to be a challenge, we can enjoy the moment for the next two weeks, but of course we have to work behind the scenes to ensure we go up the right way."
Promotion Race Heats Up
With Coventry now confirmed as champions, attention turns to the battle for the second automatic promotion spot. Several clubs remain in contention, including Ipswich Town, Millwall, Southampton, and Middlesbrough, all vying for that coveted place in the Premier League as the season enters its final two matchdays.
The Sky Blues' triumph marks a remarkable turnaround for a club that has experienced significant struggles in recent years, now poised to make their long-awaited return to English football's top tier with momentum and silverware in hand.
