Owen Cooper Carries Friend's Memory into British Title Bout

Welterweight contender Owen Cooper steps into the ring tonight with more than just championship gold on his mind. The 25-year-old fighter faces Constantin Ursu in Derby for the vacant British welterweight title and the Commonwealth belt, aiming to add these prestigious accolades to the English title he secured two years ago. However, his motivation extends far beyond personal glory, rooted deeply in the memory of a close friend lost during the Covid pandemic.

A Guardian Angel in the Corner

Cooper vividly recalls the poignant moment when his professional boxing career took a significant turn, intertwined with grief. "It was during Covid and my friend Marlon Bella had recently passed," he shared. "I was at the graveside and had a call from my coach saying that Queensberry were interested in signing me. It was an unbelievable feeling and I said to my coach I would call him back. I put the phone down and just started crying."

This emotional episode marked a turning point, providing solace during a difficult period. "It was a tough time for a lot of people and I felt like I needed something and I got it," Cooper reflected. "He’s always there. I have a little moment to myself and speak to him before the fight and speak to him after the fight. He's always on my mind. I know he would be proud of me."

Honouring a Shared Dream

Although Marlon Bella passed away before Cooper reached the pinnacle of British boxing, the fighter believes his friend always foresaw this success. "He passed before I was able to, to get on the biggest stage, but we always had a feeling that it was going to happen, it was just a case of when," Cooper explained. "He always believed in me and I hope he's proud." This enduring belief fuels Cooper's determination as he prepares to face Ursu, a formidable Moldovan opponent, in a high-stakes showdown.

The Traditional Route to Glory

Cooper's career has followed a conventional path, earning the Midlands Area title before capturing the English welterweight championship. "I said from when I started out, I’d like to do the traditional route but over the last couple years, I haven’t really given it much thought," he admitted. "It was only the other day someone said to me, 'You’ve, you’ve done it the traditional route,' and that makes me happy that, that I’ve been able to do it that way."

This methodical approach has now led him to the brink of a British title, a achievement that holds profound personal significance. As Cooper enters the ring tonight, he carries not only his own ambitions but also the legacy of a cherished friendship, transforming the fight into a tribute that transcends sport.
