Lane Kiffin Opens Up About Alcohol Addiction and Its Toll on Career and Marriage
Lane Kiffin Reveals Alcohol Struggles Affected Career and Marriage

Lane Kiffin has candidly revealed that his struggle with alcohol contributed to his 2016 separation from his wife, Layla, and impeded his professional growth as a football coach. The 51-year-old Louisiana State University head coach made these disclosures in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, amid ongoing scrutiny following his controversial departure from Ole Miss just before the school's first College Football Playoff appearance in November.

Since signing a lucrative $91 million contract to join the Rebels' Southeastern Conference rival in Baton Rouge, Kiffin has become a lightning rod for fan criticism regarding the sport's escalating financial influence and the perceived lack of loyalty among coaches. However, while he maintains indifference toward the backlash over his decision, Kiffin took full responsibility for his earlier conduct as a younger coach, husband, and father.

Obsession with Success

Reflecting on his earlier mindset, Kiffin admitted, "My whole drive when I was younger was like, 'How fast can I get everything? How fast can I get the big job? The big contract?'" As the son of legendary NFL defensive assistant Monte Kiffin, Lane quickly rose through the ranks, transitioning from quarterback at Fresno State to coaching under Pete Carroll at the University of Southern California, and eventually landing the head-coaching job with the Oakland Raiders in just over a decade.

When tensions with Raiders owner Al Davis escalated in 2008—Davis attempted to force Kiffin's resignation—he moved on to head-coaching roles at the University of Tennessee and later at USC. According to the Vanity Fair interview, this relentless pursuit of career milestones became an addiction, further fueled by alcohol. Kiffin started with beer but eventually switched to vodka, a habit that contributed to his marital breakdown in 2016 while he was working as an assistant coach under Nick Saban at the University of Alabama.

Path to Recovery

Kiffin eventually quit drinking in 2021 while serving as head coach at Ole Miss. Around the same time, he discovered yoga, which helped him shed 45 pounds. He also took up journaling, sharing with ESPN an Alcoholics Anonymous quote he had written down: "Ego was being replaced with self-respect, resentment and hatred were being replaced with tolerance and understanding."

In January, Kiffin marked five years of sobriety with a post on X, featuring a photo of himself with a smiling Layla. "Welp 5 years ago today, I made a decision that would change my life and many others around me," he wrote on January 30. "I want to say to anyone that has something holding you back from being the best version of yourself you CAN do it!! It won't be easy AT ALL, but I promise you it will be worth it."
