Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce has delivered a significant scare to the franchise after general manager Chris Ballard disclosed that the star player will be absent from the team's offseason workouts. This development follows Pierce undergoing ankle surgery, a procedure that comes just over a month after he inked a massive four-year, $116 million contract to secure his future with the Colts.
Surgery Follows Impressive Season and Major Deal
Pierce, who played through considerable ankle pain for much of the previous season, was prepared to endure similar discomfort again in the upcoming year. However, after consultations with multiple medical professionals, the Colts and Pierce collectively agreed that it was prudent to address the issue surgically now. The aim is to ensure his full recovery by the time the NFL season kicks off in September.
Recovery Timeline and Team Implications
Ballard has indicated that Pierce is expected to require approximately three months for recovery. This timeline means he will miss a substantial portion of offseason practices under head coach Shane Steichen, which could impact team preparations. "I knew he was hurting at times last year," Ballard stated on Monday. "So, finally, after consulting with multiple doctors and him, he had a cleanup done. We don't expect any long-term implications here."
The timing of this surgery adds a layer of anxiety for the Colts' management, particularly after the recent trade of Michael Pittman Jr. to the Pittsburgh Steelers. With Pittman Jr. gone, Pierce is poised to become the primary offensive weapon, a role underscored by his lucrative new contract. On March 9, the Colts moved swiftly to prevent Pierce from entering free agency by securing him with the hefty deal.
Pierce's Commitment and Performance
Pierce publicly affirmed his dedication to Indianapolis during an appearance on 'The Pat McAfee Show,' where he announced his decision to stay. "I knew where my heart was. I loved the city of Indianapolis," he expressed, noting that he received numerous offers from other teams. He reflected on the team's early-season success, saying, "I just seen where we were at last year, early in the year, kind of rolling. I truly believe we were the No. 1 team in the NFL and just obviously didn't finish out the season like we should have. But I think we get back to where we were."
Statistically, Pierce has been a standout performer, leading all NFL qualifying receivers in yards per catch for the past two consecutive seasons. A second-round draft pick from Cincinnati in 2022, he achieved career-best numbers in the 2025 season. He recorded 47 receptions out of 84 targets for 1,003 yards, along with six touchdown catches and an impressive average of 21.3 yards per reception.
As the Colts navigate this period without their key receiver during offseason activities, all eyes will be on Pierce's recovery progress. The team is banking on his return to full health to bolster their offensive lineup for the challenges ahead in the new NFL season.
