A University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football player has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing two teammates on Saturday morning, hours before the team's game against the University of South Florida.
UAB released a statement confirming that both injured players are in stable condition and that the suspect is in custody. The university did not disclose the names of those involved, citing patient privacy and the ongoing investigation.
According to AL.com, the suspect faces charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder. The incident occurred at the Football Operations Building.
Despite the events, the team decided to play the afternoon game at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, where 29 players were honoured on Senior Day. Interim head coach Alex Mortensen noted that a small number of players opted not to play. UAB lost 48-18 to South Florida.
