Cole Palmer right to skip Nations League despite Tuchel criticism
Cole Palmer right to skip Nations League despite Tuchel criticism

Cole Palmer should not be overly concerned by Thomas Tuchel's recent criticism, as the Chelsea talent is arguably acting in his own best interests by declining to join England's Nations League squad. The versatile attacking midfielder will not feature in the Three Lions' four matches during the late September and early October international break.

England, under Tuchel, faced Spain at Wembley on Saturday evening, before taking on Czechia away on Tuesday, September 29. The Three Lions then play Croatia on the road on Saturday, October 3, before rounding off their first four Nations League matches with another encounter against Czechia, this time on home soil.

Tuchel questions Palmer's commitment

Palmer is one of several England players who have withdrawn from international duty to focus on nursing minor injuries, alongside the likes of Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento. The news has not sat well with Tuchel, who accused Palmer of "missing too many opportunities" to represent his country.

The German head coach said: "He misses too many opportunities, he misses way too many camps with injuries. It's not his fault." He added: "I can only judge what I witness in my team. For that you have to be in camp. If you are not in camp, there is a next level you cannot achieve unless you do it in my team."

Palmer prioritises fitness after injury-hit season

At 24, Palmer has plenty of time left in his career to represent England, regardless of whether Tuchel remains at the helm. The Wythenshawe-born talent was among a number of players dropped by Tuchel for this summer's World Cup in North America, alongside Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Lewis Hall.

The Nations League is hardly a tournament that will define Palmer's legacy as a player. The attacking talent suffered a sub-par season through injury early in 2025/26, with Chelsea suffering as a result. Palmer was sidelined through a groin issue between August and November, with a broken toe immediately after adding to the problem. Muscular issues in his thigh and hamstring towards the end of the season also proved problematic.

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League, while Palmer ended his campaign with 10 goals and an assist. With that in mind, Palmer will want to stay as fit as possible for the new season, especially given the form he currently shows. He has racked up two goals and two assists from the Blues' five opening league matches, and plans to use the international break to recover from a minor issue ahead of the home clash with Bournemouth on Saturday, October 10.

International breaks take their toll

Chelsea missed out on European football this season after their diminished Premier League performance in 2025/26, partly due to injuries. Xabi Alonso will hope to keep his players as fit as possible for the current campaign to avoid a similar situation in 2027/28. Palmer missing the Nations League should play a major role in keeping one of his most valuable assets healthy.

Complaints have been rife in certain circles regarding the timing of the Nations League, with several Premier League players returning from international duty early through injury. Arsenal's Kai Havertz limped off with a hamstring issue following Germany's Nations League opener with the Netherlands, while Sunderland's Brian Brobbey was also substituted in the first half with a hamstring problem. Dan Ballard also appeared to suffer a hamstring injury during Northern Ireland's 1-0 win over Georgia.

Chelsea fans will have nothing to worry about regarding Palmer, given his choice to stay home and recover from a small issue rather than potentially worsening it by representing the Three Lions.
