Jonny Clayton Triumphs in Glasgow Premier League Night
Welsh darts professional Jonny Clayton has expressed his immense pride after securing a decisive victory on the third night of the BetMGM Premier League season in Glasgow. The 51-year-old described the achievement as a "great honour" following his impressive performances against top-tier opponents.
Clayton Ends Losing Streak Against Price
Clayton's journey to the top began with a crucial quarter-final match against fellow Welshman Gerwyn Price. In a significant turnaround, Clayton secured a 6-3 victory, ending a frustrating run of 10 consecutive defeats against Price. This win provided a substantial psychological boost, with Clayton noting it was a "big relief" to finally overcome his compatriot.
Dominant Display Against Littler and van Veen
Advancing to the semi-finals, Clayton faced world champion Luke Littler, who had received a bye due to Michael van Gerwen's illness. Clayton delivered a commanding performance, thrashing the 19-year-old prodigy 6-1 in a one-sided encounter. He then carried this momentum into the final against Dutchman Gian van Veen, who was competing in his second final in three weeks.
In the championship match, Clayton was again in fine form, comprehensively beating the 23-year-old van Veen 6-2. The victory was sealed with a magnificent 156 checkout, propelling Clayton to the top of the Premier League table with nine points.
Clayton Reflects on His Success
Speaking after his triumphs, Clayton shared his thoughts on the evening's events. "Yeah, it's a great honour to win one of these nights against these players," he stated. "The first job was trying to get Gerwyn out... that little thing of losing to him 10 times. That was a big relief really because I've had a few chances against him before, but not taken them."
He added, "It was nice to get that monkey off my back. It really was. You think, how do I beat him? I need to take my chances, what do I do to do this? So tonight it worked for me, I was quite solid against him and it was just my night and I am chuffed to bits with that."
Clayton also expressed surprise at his dominant win over Littler, saying, "I didn't expect to beat the best darts player on the planet 6-1 and then to beat Gian in the end, you know, it's my night. It's my night, and that's all that counts." He acknowledged the role of luck in darts, noting, "You need a bit of luck. Obviously you need to play well but if he doesn't hit and I do, then the ball's in my court and that's what happened tonight. It put a smile on my face."
Other Notable Matches from Night Three
The evening featured several other thrilling contests. In his quarter-final, Clayton raced into a 2-0 lead over Price and maintained control throughout, clinching the match 6-3. In the other semi-final, Gian van Veen staged a remarkable comeback from 3-1 down to defeat reigning champion Luke Humphries 6-5 in a nail-biting encounter.
Humphries had led at various stages, but van Veen's persistence paid off. Humphries missed a crucial bullseye for a 5-3 advantage, allowing van Veen to level at 4-4. The Dutchman then hit a double 14 on his second attempt to go 5-4 ahead, and although Humphries equalised, van Veen ultimately prevailed.
Earlier in the night, van Veen averaged over 104 to beat Stephen Bunting 6-3 in his quarter-final, while Humphries demonstrated his class with a 6-2 victory over Northern Irishman Josh Rock in his opening match.
Jonny Clayton's success in Glasgow marks a significant milestone in his career, showcasing his resilience and skill against some of the world's best darts players. His victory not only tops the Premier League standings but also reinforces his status as a formidable competitor in the sport.
