Chelsea have condemned racist abuse aimed at their under-19 players during a Uefa Youth League match against Qarabag in Baku on Wednesday. The game was temporarily stopped after a home supporter allegedly made racist gestures and monkey noises towards the Chelsea players following their opening goal.
The incident occurred in the 58th minute when Sol Gordon scored, and a spectator in the sparse crowd of about 100 reportedly directed racist abuse at the young Blues. The Ukrainian referee, Dmytro Kubriak, halted play to consult with both coaching staff. Chelsea went on to win 5-0 after the match resumed at the Azersun Arena.
A Chelsea spokesperson said: 'We are aware of an incident... in which, after scoring, a number of our players were subjected to racist abuse from an individual in the crowd. Racism and all forms of discriminatory behaviour are completely unacceptable.' The club added that they have reported the matter to the Uefa match delegate and expect a full investigation. A Qarabag spokesperson apologised, saying it does not reflect the club's values and will be investigated thoroughly.
Chelsea's perfect start to the Youth League continued with goals from Shim Mheuka, Frankie Dunham, and a brace from Jesse Derry. The senior side had earlier drawn 2-2 with Qarabag in the Champions League. Uefa will wait for the referee's report before taking any action.
