Michael Emenalo has resigned as Chelsea's technical director, bringing an end to his 10-year association with the Premier League champions. The 52-year-old, one of owner Roman Abramovich's most trusted lieutenants, informed the club of his decision on Monday morning after first floating the idea over the summer.
Emenalo, who joined Chelsea as an opposition scout in 2007 under Avram Grant, rose through the ranks to become a board member. He was a key figure in the club's recruitment and scouting network, but recent transfer frustrations, including missing out on Romelu Lukaku, Alex Sandro, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ross Barkley, had led to tensions with head coach Antonio Conte.
Chairman Bruce Buck said the resignation had been accepted 'with regret', while director Marina Granovskaia praised Emenalo's 'tireless work' and confirmed the club would review its management structure. Emenalo is expected to assist with the transition before potentially taking up a similar role at Monaco.
During his decade at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the Europa League and the Champions League, with 10 managers coming and going. Emenalo also oversaw the academy and loan system, with 38 players currently out on temporary deals.
