A Charlton Athletic supporter has died after being taken ill during the club's Championship fixture against Portsmouth at The Valley. The match was abandoned in the 12th minute after the fan suffered a medical emergency in the stands.
The referee, Matthew Donohue, paused play when supporters shouted to attract his attention to the severity of the incident in the lower tier of the Covered End. Players were taken off the pitch six minutes later, and at 1.30pm it was announced that the game would not resume.
Despite treatment from medical staff in the stands and subsequent hospital care, the supporter later died. Both clubs expressed their devastation and offered condolences.
Charlton Athletic released a statement saying: 'The club are devastated to report that a Charlton Athletic supporter has died following a medical emergency during today's game... The club would like to thank the Charlton staff and first responders who did everything they could, but sadly the supporter later passed away in hospital.'
Portsmouth posted on X: '#Pompey are devastated to learn that the Charlton supporter taken ill at today's game has passed away. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and friends at this difficult time.'
