Kyprios repelled a late charge from Stradivarius in an absorbing renewal of the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, adding to his Ascot Gold Cup triumph. The duo raced for the line, having seen off Trueshan, in contention for the £283,550 first prize. Cheers from the crowd willed on Stradivarius, in his pursuit of a fifth success in the race, but Kyprios held a neck advantage.
Trueshan raced freely for Hollie Doyle and kept Stradivarius in his place at the top of the home straight, but he didn't possess the final gear change to go with the front two. Jockey Ryan Moore praised Kyprios, saying: 'He is a proper Group 1 horse and Aidan (O'Brien, trainer) has always had a lot of belief in the horse. At the start of the year he was saying what he thought he could do, so all credit to him and the team at home for getting him back.'
Connections of Trueshan won't be calling it a day just yet with the 20-time winner, despite his lack of a final gear. The Alan King-trained stayer put in a bold effort but could not match the pace of the leading pair.
Ryan Moore went on to record a double on the card, while Frankie Dettori was on the scoresheet thanks to Forest Falcon's opening display. The day's racing also featured a thrilling finish in the World Pool Lennox Stakes, where Sandrine had just a neck to spare over the runner-up, with a short-head back to third-placed Pogo.
