Matheus Cunha has revealed he is trying to convince his Manchester United and Brazil teammate Casemiro to remain at Old Trafford beyond this season. Casemiro, 34, is expected to leave United when his contract expires in the summer, but Cunha has publicly urged him to extend his stay.
Speaking after United's 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, Cunha told TNT Sports: 'I'm always asking him: Come on, stay at Manchester United. Just one year with me, no! Let's go for the second little year... We're very close, he's always helping me, and it's incredibly rewarding to play with him here and with the national team.'
Casemiro joined United from Real Madrid in August 2022 for £70 million and has made 154 appearances, scoring 24 goals and winning two trophies. His recent form has been among his best since arriving, including a goal and a standout display against Villa, prompting chants of 'One more year' from supporters.
Interim manager Michael Carrick did not rule out a contract extension, saying: 'I think the impact he's had has been terrific... I think it was a nice moment at the end there with the supporters, and having that connection and the respect.' However, no internal talks have taken place regarding a U-turn on Casemiro's departure.
United's win over Villa moved them third in the Premier League, three points clear of fourth-placed Villa and five ahead of Liverpool. They next face Bournemouth on Friday before a three-and-a-half-week break for international fixtures and the FA Cup.
