Michael Carrick would welcome Marcus Rashford back into his Manchester United squad this season, according to former Red Devils defender Wes Brown. Brown also believes Carrick's side need to sign another centre-forward this summer, with Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins among the names linked.
Rashford's hopes of a return to Barcelona have all but ended after the Catalan club signed Karim Adeyemi, having already bought Anthony Gordon for nearly £70 million from Newcastle. United are keen to offload Rashford's £325,000-a-week wages as they no longer fit the wage structure at Old Trafford.
“I'm sure Michael Carrick would love him back because it gives him another option,” Brown told the Mirror. “If he could come into the scene this season, that helps out massively. I think if it was just up to Michael, he would definitely be back in.” Brown added that wages could be a complicating factor, but said Rashford's quality makes him a valuable asset.
United have already completed deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined £85 million, strengthening midfield. However, Brown believes further firepower is needed. “We've got one No.9 in Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha can play there, but I think that area probably could be boosted,” he said, suggesting another striker would aid trophy ambitions.
Former United forward Louis Saha echoed the sentiment, calling for an experienced striker to help develop Sesko. “He is a promising striker with incredible talent, so I would love to see him improve this season,” Saha said. He also stressed the need for defensive depth, particularly at left-back and centre-back, to cope with four competitions.
Saha expressed concern over the squad's ability to handle the increased fixture load. “They are going to be in four competitions for the majority of the season, playing twice a week, which is a drastic change. It will be a real test of both Carrick and his players' resolve,” he said.
