Michael Carrick's Managerial History Hints at Marcus Rashford Manchester United Reprieve

Michael Carrick's appointment as Manchester United's interim head coach last month could potentially reignite Marcus Rashford's stalled career at Old Trafford. The former midfielder, who replaced the sacked Ruben Amorim for the remainder of the season, has a precedent for overturning a predecessor's decision to sideline a player, offering a glimmer of hope for the academy graduate currently on loan at Barcelona.

Carrick's Previous Caretaker Stint and the Phil Jones Precedent

This marks Carrick's second interim role at United, having previously served as caretaker manager for three matches following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal in November 2021. During that brief period before Ralf Rangnick's arrival, Carrick notably reversed Solskjaer's decision to completely freeze out defender Phil Jones.

The United legend reintegrated Jones into the first-team setup after a year out of contention, clearly recognising the centre-back's value. Carrick even included Jones in the squad for a Champions League victory over Villarreal in Spain, despite the player being ineligible for selection. Jones subsequently made his actual return to the pitch under Rangnick in January 2022.

Rashford's Current Situation and the Barcelona Loan

Marcus Rashford's United career appeared conclusively finished under Amorim after a bitter disagreement with the former head coach. The England international was frozen out and has not featured for United since December 2024, having spent the latter part of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa.

Upon his return last summer, Rashford was not permitted to train with the main squad as he finalised a season-long loan move to Barcelona in July. He also lost his cherished United No.10 squad number to Matheus Cunha. However, the 28-year-old forward remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2028 and has impressed at Barcelona, contributing 23 goals and assists in 34 appearances this term.

The Slim Possibility of a Rashford Revival Under Carrick

There exists a faint possibility that Carrick, should he secure the permanent managerial position at the end of this campaign, might decide that Rashford's talents could still benefit United. Carrick worked closely with the England international for three-and-a-half years as a first-team coach and later as caretaker manager, giving him comprehensive insight into Rashford's abilities and potential.

Nevertheless, it is important to note that Carrick reportedly did not consider recalling Rashford during the January transfer window, possibly due to the uncertainty surrounding his own future. The 44-year-old's contract is currently set to expire at the conclusion of the present season.

Executive Preparations for a Permanent Departure

United's hierarchy, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, are reportedly planning for Rashford's permanent exit in the upcoming summer transfer window. Barcelona are prepared to activate the £26 million buy option they negotiated with United for the forward last summer.

This clause, if exercised, would likely signal the definitive end of Rashford's tenure with his boyhood club, even if Carrick were to assume the permanent managerial role. The financial commitment from Barcelona underscores their satisfaction with his performances and their intent to secure his services long-term.
