Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the season, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. The 44-year-old will be joined by a coaching staff including Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans and Craig Mawson.
Carrick, a former United midfielder with five Premier League titles and a Champions League winner, previously served as caretaker manager in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was dismissed. He won two of his three matches in charge before Ralf Rangnick took over. His most recent role was at Middlesbrough, where he was sacked last summer after failing to secure promotion from the Championship.
The interim boss faces a tough start, with the Manchester derby on Saturday followed by a trip to league leaders Arsenal. United currently sit seventh in the Premier League, one point off the top five, and Carrick's primary task is to guide the club into Champions League qualification.
Director of football Jason Wilcox said Carrick 'knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United' and is ready to lead the talented group for the remainder of the season. The club plans to appoint a permanent successor in the summer, with Thomas Tuchel, Oliver Glasner and Gareth Southgate among the names linked.
