Michael Carrick Plans for Manchester United's Future Despite Uncertain Role
Michael Carrick has confirmed that he is taking an active role in shaping Manchester United's plans for the upcoming season, even as he awaits a decision on his own future at the club. Carrick's contract as head coach runs until the end of the current campaign, but he remains unsure if he will continue beyond that point.
Carrick's Impact and Involvement in Key Decisions
Since arriving as Ruben Amorim's replacement in January, Carrick has made a strong impression, helping to lift the side firmly back into contention for Champions League qualification. His efforts have earned significant backing from the dressing room, and he is already influencing decisions regarding the playing staff.
This week, defender Harry Maguire signed a new one-year contract, a move that Carrick was involved in alongside chief executive Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox. Carrick emphasized his commitment to the club's planning process, stating, "Certainly, in the role I'm in, there's decisions that need taking care of. I said it as soon as I came here – I'm part of that and whatever that looks like moving forward, I'm part of that."
He added, "I'm trying to improve things and make things better all the time. Certainly there's conversations in different directions and different things that I'm definitely part of. And I think it should be that way anyway, because things need done. So I'm here to take care of that."
Immediate Focus on Leeds Clash and Team Selection
In the more immediate term, Carrick must focus on Monday night's crucial clash with rivals Leeds. Maguire is suspended for that game, which could see a return for Lisandra Martinez in central defence. The Argentina defender has missed five games with a calf problem but participated fully in the recent training camp in Ireland.
Carrick is carefully weighing up Martinez's involvement, noting, "We wouldn't be pushed into anything. That's a decision that we'll take. He's back training, which is great, and back on the grass. But we've certainly got to make the right decision and make sure he's ready."
He stressed the importance of balancing short-term needs with long-term goals, saying, "It's important, as the next game always is, but the most important is the bigger picture."
As Manchester United navigates this transitional period, Carrick's proactive approach to planning underscores his dedication to the club's success, regardless of the uncertainty surrounding his personal role. His involvement in key decisions highlights the trust placed in him by the club's leadership, even as his future remains up in the air.
