Carrick Dismisses Rooney's Endorsement for Man Utd Role

Michael Carrick has played down the growing clamour for him to be appointed as Manchester United's permanent manager, despite receiving a strong public endorsement from former teammate Wayne Rooney. Carrick's position strengthened significantly after overseeing an impressive 3-1 Premier League victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, a result that solidifies United's grip on a Champions League qualification spot.

Rooney's Vocal Support for Carrick

Following the match, Wayne Rooney stated unequivocally on BBC Radio 5 Live that Carrick should "100 per cent" be given the managerial role on a long-term basis. Rooney emphasised his deep familiarity with Carrick's character and personality, arguing that the club needed a calm leader who understands the institution and could provide the players with necessary support.

"We have seen the players play with more quality, more together as a team, and they look like a very strong team," Rooney remarked. "For me, why would you change?"

Carrick's Deflection of Speculation

When questioned about the increasing speculation surrounding his future, Carrick attempted to laugh off the attention. He insisted that external noise does not affect him and that he remains focused solely on his current responsibilities and improving the team.

"There's not that much noise is there? I don't mean Wayne, just in general. It's only noise if you listen to it," Carrick said. "It doesn't affect me one bit, to be honest. I'm in this position at the moment, doing the best I can, loving it obviously, and we keep pushing for more."

Fernandes Stars in Crucial Victory

The match itself was highlighted by another masterful performance from Bruno Fernandes, who cemented his status as a key player for United. Fernandes provided assists for both Casemiro and Matheus Cunha, with Benjamin Sesko adding a third goal for the hosts after Ross Barkley's equaliser for Villa.

With these contributions, Fernandes achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming only the third Manchester United player in the Premier League era to reach both 100 goals and 100 assists, joining the exclusive company of Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs.

Chasing Premier League History

Fernandes now has 16 assists for the season, putting him within reach of the single-season Premier League record of 20, jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Carrick praised Fernandes's consistent impact in crucial moments but suggested records should come naturally rather than being actively chased.

"Bruno has done it for a long period of time now," Carrick noted. "In the big moments, making a difference whether he's scoring or creating, he's normally around it."

Table Implications and Villa's Struggles

The victory represents United's seventh win in nine matches under Carrick's temporary stewardship, moving them six points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea and firmly positioning them for Champions League qualification. Conversely, Aston Villa's defeat marks their third consecutive Premier League loss, leaving them three points behind United.

Villa manager Unai Emery acknowledged his team's ongoing struggles but insisted he saw signs of improvement and progress despite the disappointing result.

"Overall I feel we did good things but it was not enough," Emery stated. "We need more, but we are progressing. Today the result is not changing, we were expecting that could happen because Manchester United here at home now are in a good moment and played very intelligently, but we competed and this is the way I want to keep it."
