Michael Carrick has been appointed interim head coach of Manchester United until the end of the season, calling on everyone at the club to 'pull together' to restore success. The former midfielder takes over after Ruben Amorim was sacked following a poor run of results and a falling out with the hierarchy.
Carrick has brought ex-England assistant Steve Holland and former defender Jonathan Woodgate onto his backroom staff, joining Jonny Evans, Travis Binnion and Craig Mawson. This is his second interim spell, having previously taken charge of three games after Ole Gunnar Solskjær was dismissed in 2021.
Director of football Jason Wilcox led the process to replace Amorim, targeting candidates with previous club experience. Carrick and Solskjær were interviewed, but Carrick was chosen for his leadership skills and knowledge of the squad.
'Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour,' Carrick said. 'I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect.' Wilcox added: 'Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United.'
Darren Fletcher, who took charge of games against Burnley and Brighton, will revert to his role as under-18s head coach. The Scot impressed the hierarchy but it was deemed best for his development to remain in the academy.
