Jamie Carragher has cautioned Liverpool fans against making dangerous comparisons between Jurgen Klopp and legendary managers of the past. The former defender, now a pundit, warned that such parallels could create unrealistic expectations for the current manager.
Carragher's comments come amid growing excitement over Klopp's impact at Anfield, with the German having transformed the club's fortunes since his arrival in 2015. However, Carragher stressed that Klopp should be allowed to forge his own legacy without being measured against iconic figures like Bill Shankly or Bob Paisley.
Speaking to the media, Carragher said: 'We have to be careful not to put too much pressure on Jurgen by comparing him to the greats of the past. He is doing a fantastic job, but he needs time and space to build his own success.'
The warning comes as Liverpool prepare for the Europa League final against Sevilla, where Klopp will seek his first trophy with the club. Carragher believes that a victory would be a significant step, but cautioned against viewing it as the start of a new era of dominance.
Carragher also highlighted the importance of patience, noting that Klopp's predecessor Brendan Rodgers came close to winning the Premier League in 2014 but ultimately fell short. 'We need to support the manager and the team, but we must also be realistic about the challenges ahead,' he added.
