Chelsea agree personal terms with Granit Xhaka for Alonso rebuild

Chelsea have reportedly agreed personal terms with Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, marking their first major move under new head coach Xabi Alonso. The Blues are aiming to rebuild after a disappointing season that saw them finish ninth in the Premier League, missing out on European qualification entirely.

Xhaka's role in Sunderland's success

Xhaka joined Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025, helping the newly promoted side secure a surprise Europa League spot. The Swiss international was instrumental in Sunderland's campaign, providing experience and leadership in midfield. According to Sky Germany, Chelsea have reached a full verbal agreement with Xhaka, with a formal deal expected to follow.

Despite turning 34 in September, Xhaka is under contract at Sunderland until 2028, meaning Chelsea will likely pay a significant fee to secure his services. The move reunites Xhaka with Alonso, who previously coached him at Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso's praise for Xhaka

Speaking during their time together at Leverkusen, Alonso described Xhaka as "a real fighter" who "showed the big heart he has." He added: "He is an aggressive leader and constantly pushes the limits." Xhaka himself acknowledged his role in stabilising young squads, saying in 2023: "Bayer 04 signed me to stabilise this young team. I'll try and do that on every level, also mentally."

Chelsea's season and transfer strategy

Chelsea started the season strongly under Enzo Maresca but collapsed after his departure in early 2026. Despite reaching the FA Cup final, the Blues ended the season in ninth place. A final-day defeat to Sunderland saw them slip out of European contention entirely. Alonso's appointment signals a new direction, with Xhaka's experience seen as key to mentoring Chelsea's young squad.

Chelsea will return to pre-season next month before starting their Premier League campaign on August 24.
