Jamie Carragher Delivers Scathing Assessment of Tottenham's Relegation Battle
Jamie Carragher has launched a stinging critique of Tottenham Hotspur, branding them "awful" and predicting they will be relegated from the Premier League this season. His comments come after Roberto De Zerbi's first game in charge ended in a dismal 1-0 defeat away to Sunderland, leaving Spurs languishing in the relegation zone.
De Zerbi's Debut Ends in Defeat as Tottenham's Woes Deepen
Tottenham's loss at the Stadium of Light marks a nightmare start for new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who was appointed on a five-year deal following the departure of Igor Tudor. The result leaves Spurs two points adrift of safety with only six games remaining in their fight to avoid a first relegation since 1977.
Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, expressed disbelief at Tottenham's predicament and questioned their ability to secure vital points in the run-in. "Normally, a new manager comes in and you say, 'It's his first game, that has to go out the window'," Carragher began. "It had to go out the window for Igor Tudor and it's the same for Roberto de Zerbi because of where they find themselves."
He added bluntly: "I can't believe it. Tottenham look like they're going to go down. The other teams have something going for them. One point in 24... You look at fixtures, you think that's a good game for Tottenham but they're awful."
Tottenham's Uphill Battle to Avoid the Drop
The defeat was compounded by results elsewhere, with West Ham beating Wolves 4-0 and Nottingham Forest drawing 1-1 at home to Aston Villa. This pushed Tottenham into the bottom three and highlighted the scale of their task ahead.
De Zerbi's side now face a challenging fixture list, with home games against Brighton, Leeds, and Everton, and away trips to Wolves, Aston Villa, and Chelsea before the season concludes. Carragher was particularly pessimistic about their chances, stating: "Do you think Tottenham will go to Wolves, bottom of the league, and win? No chance."
Despite the bleak outlook, De Zerbi attempted to strike a positive note in his post-match assessment. "I think we played a good game, not enough to win but we didn't deserve to lose," he said. "We have to accept and move on. We played a good game. We have enough quality to come out from this difficult moment."
The manager also addressed the injury to defender Cristian Romero, who left the pitch in tears during the match, which was halted for eight minutes. "I'm sorry for the result, I'm sorry for the Romero injury and I hope for us and for him that it is not important," De Zerbi added.
A Season of Struggle and Uncertainty
Tottenham's struggles have been a recurring theme this season, with the team managing just one point from their last 24 available. This poor form has left them in a precarious position, with Carragher's verdict laying bare the enormity of the challenge facing De Zerbi and his squad.
As the relegation battle intensifies, all eyes will be on whether Tottenham can muster the spirit and quality needed to survive. With six games left, the pressure is mounting, and Carragher's harsh words only underscore the growing belief that Spurs could be heading for the Championship.
