Jamie Carragher Embraces New Ambassador Role for Footballers' Boxing Charity Spectacle

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is set to feature in a prominent new capacity at an upcoming charity boxing evening, where former professional footballers will make their debuts in the ring. The event, organised by ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Graham Stack through his Pro Project Promotions, marks the second instalment of 'A Night to Remember', following a highly successful inaugural edition.

Charity Event Details and Fundraising Ambitions

The boxing showcase is scheduled for April 17 this year at the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool. Building on the triumph of the first event in October 2025, which raised an impressive £127,500 for various UK charities, organisers aim to exceed £120,000 this time. Proceeds will specifically benefit two Merseyside-based charities: Children's Charity Merseyside and Autism Merseyside.

Jamie Carragher, who has previously trained in boxing gyms, will not be fighting but will serve as an ambassador for the occasion. He will participate in a football Q&A session alongside Everton favourite Francis Jeffers, adding star power to the evening. The event will also be attended by boxing luminaries including Tony Bellew and two-weight world champion Natasha Jonas, who will coach the former footballers alongside the celebrated Smith Brothers.

Former Footballers Transition to the Boxing Ring

Ten retired professional footballers are preparing for three rounds of combat in the boxing ring, highlighting both their physical prowess and the charitable cause. The planned matchups feature notable names from the football world:

  • Former Stoke and Wolves forward Chris Iwelumo versus Swansea City favourite Lee Trundle
  • Ex-Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme against Bristol City legend and Liverpool-born Bradley Orr
  • Championship legend Ross McCormack facing former Leeds and Sheffield United defender Matthew Kilgallon, a self-confessed boxing enthusiast

Additional participants include ex-Stoke City player Carl Dickinson and former Wigan and Wolves wide man Adam Hammill, ensuring a diverse roster of footballing talent.

Addressing Post-Career Challenges for Athletes

Beyond the vital fundraising, the event aims to shed light on the significant challenges former footballers encounter after retiring from the sport. Organiser Graham Stack emphasised that the drive to make a difference persists beyond their playing days, addressing issues such as maintaining physical fitness and protecting mental health.

"The drive to make a difference doesn't end when the game does," Stack stated, underscoring the event's dual purpose of supporting charities while providing retired athletes with a meaningful platform to contribute to society.

Community Impact and Sporting Crossover

The fusion of football and boxing communities creates a unique sporting spectacle that draws attention to important charitable causes. With Merseyside legends like Carragher involved and high-profile boxing figures in attendance, the event promises to be a memorable night of entertainment and philanthropy.

As preparations intensify, the anticipation builds for what organisers hope will be another record-breaking fundraising achievement, demonstrating the enduring power of sport to unite communities and support those in need.
