Cape Verde Secure First World Cup Win Against Uruguay

Cape Verde stunned two-time World Cup winners Uruguay with a 2-0 victory in their Group H opener, marking the African nation's first ever win in the tournament. Goals from captain Ryan Mendes and midfielder Jamiro Monteiro in either half secured a historic result at the Lusail Stadium.

The victory puts Cape Verde top of Group H after the first round of matches, with Uruguay left to rue missed chances. According to FIFA statistics, Cape Verde had just 35% possession but registered five shots on target to Uruguay's three.

Mendes Breaks Deadlock Before Half-Time

Cape Verde took the lead in the 39th minute when Mendes pounced on a defensive error from Uruguay centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez. The captain slotted home from close range after Gimenez misjudged a long ball forward, sparking wild celebrations among the Cape Verdean bench.

Uruguay had dominated possession in the first half but failed to create clear-cut opportunities, with striker Darwin Nunez heading their best chance wide from a Facundo Pellistri cross. The South Americans had won their previous two World Cup openers, against Egypt in 2018 and South Korea in 2022.

Monteiro Doubles Lead After the Break

Monteiro doubled Cape Verde's lead in the 57th minute with a fine individual effort. The midfielder picked up the ball on the left flank, cut inside past two defenders, and unleashed a curling shot into the top corner that left Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet with no chance.

Uruguay pushed forward in search of a lifeline, but Cape Verde's defense, marshalled by veteran center-back Stopira, held firm. Substitute Luis Suarez had a goal disallowed for offside in the 78th minute after a VAR review, compounding Uruguay's frustration.

Historic Moment for Cape Verdean Football

The result is the biggest in Cape Verde's football history. The island nation, with a population of around 560,000, is the smallest country by population to win a World Cup match since Trinidad and Tobago in 2006. Coach Bubista praised his team's discipline and belief after the match.

"We knew Uruguay were favorites, but we have shown that we belong at this level," Bubista said. "The players executed the game plan perfectly and deserved this victory." Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa admitted his side were second best on the night.

"Cape Verde were more aggressive and wanted it more," Bielsa said. "We have to learn from this and bounce back in our next game." Uruguay next face South Korea, while Cape Verde take on Portugal in their second Group H fixture.
