Nicky Butt Brands Roy Keane 'Very Stubborn' in Michael Carrick Manchester United Debate
Nicky Butt has launched a scathing critique of Roy Keane, labelling the Manchester United legend as 'very stubborn' following his recent comments on Michael Carrick's suitability for the permanent managerial role at Old Trafford. Carrick, who took over as interim boss earlier this season, has steered the Red Devils to the brink of a Champions League spot with an impressive run of seven wins from nine games.
Keane's Skepticism and Butt's Rebuttal
Despite Carrick's phenomenal start, Roy Keane remains unconvinced that he should be appointed on a full-term basis. In a candid interview with Paddy Power, Butt responded directly to Keane's stance, acknowledging his colleague's stubborn nature while defending Carrick's achievements. 'Roy is very stubborn in what he thinks and says, and that's what makes him what he is,' Butt stated. 'He genuinely believes there is better out there, and I understand what he means because Michael hasn't got the experience.'
Butt emphasised that Carrick's current success does not automatically qualify him for the permanent position, highlighting the complexities of long-term management. 'Michael is a phenomenal guy and he's done exceptionally well, but does that make him the best candidate? I don't know, and no one will know until he goes through two or three transfer windows,' he explained. 'Right now, he's just coaching the players and putting the team out on the pitch. When you get involved with recruitment and you get bad press, that's a different kettle of fish.'
Butt's Analysis of Managerial Candidates
Expanding on the debate, Butt analysed potential alternatives to Carrick, suggesting that top-tier managers might not be viable options for United's rebuild. He pointed out that Carlo Ancelotti is unlikely to commit to a long-term project, while Thomas Tuchel's new contract with England and Diego Simeone's lucrative deal at Atletico Madrid make them improbable targets. 'The only one, maybe, would be Luis Enrique,' Butt speculated, referring to the PSG boss.
Butt also expressed sympathy for the club's decision-makers, noting the pressure on executives Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada to make the right choice. 'I'm glad I'm not the one picking the next manager,' he admitted. 'They've got a couple wrong - Erik ten Hag by giving him a new contract, Ruben Amorim wrong as they sacked him. They can't get another one wrong.'
Carrick's Future and Club Dynamics
Despite the skepticism, Butt believes Carrick's enthusiasm and love for Manchester United could make him the ideal candidate for a rebuilding phase. 'Michael will have the enthusiasm for that because of his age, drive and love for the club,' he said. 'He might get to the level that Roy is speaking about - he hasn't done it yet but that's normal. His results so far have been phenomenal.'
Butt concluded by predicting that the club will likely offer Carrick the permanent role, setting up a scenario where he must prove doubters like Keane wrong. 'I think the club will give him the job and he'll have to prove people wrong, Roy being one of them,' he asserted, underscoring the high-stakes nature of the decision at Old Trafford.
