Bruno Fernandes 'in tears' after failed Tottenham transfer before Man Utd move
Bruno Fernandes cried after failed Tottenham transfer

Bruno Fernandes' Manchester United future remains uncertain as speculation mounts over a potential summer exit. The midfielder has a love-hate relationship with transfer windows, having been left in tears after a previous move fell through.

Failed Tottenham Move

The Manchester United captain was coming off the best season of his career at Sporting CP, scoring 32 goals across all competitions in the 2018/19 campaign. He was expecting to join Tottenham that summer, but the deal collapsed.

Tottenham agreed a fee with Sporting and personal terms with Fernandes. The Portuguese international was set to form a formidable trio alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. However, the Premier League side backed out because they could not agree on the payment structure of the transfer fee.

According to the Daily Mail, Fernandes cried when learning of the outcome in the office of the Sporting chairman. The Portugal international eventually joined Manchester United six months later in a £47 million deal. Since his arrival in January 2020, the 31-year-old has become one of the league's best players and arguably United's greatest signing since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Fernandes Reflects on Failed Transfer

Fernandes opened up about the failed move in 2024 when writing for the Players' Tribune. He said: "The previous summer, there were some rumours about Premier League clubs being interested in me, but the only thing that was concrete was Tottenham. It feels weird to me now, but at the time, I was excited. One of my life goals was to play in the Premier League. I tried to block out all the noise, but in the age we are living in, with social media and phones and text, of course, my friends let me know about the rumours. As a kid from Portugal, you can't help but dream a bit about playing at the big grounds in England. In the end, the clubs couldn't reach an agreement, and the deal fell apart."

Current Situation at Manchester United

Fernandes has scored 106 goals and contributed 70 assists in 323 games for United. His future at Old Trafford remains unknown. Under contract until 2027, with United holding an option to extend by a further 12 months, the midfielder has a £57 million release clause, according to The Telegraph.

Fernandes has previously received mammoth offers from Saudi Arabia but could be convinced to stay if United secure Champions League football. He is just two assists shy of breaking the Premier League's all-time assist record of 20 in a season, showing he is at the peak of his powers.

Key Factor: Michael Carrick's Appointment

Alongside securing passage into Europe, Mirror Football exclusively reported that ensuring the club captain remains in Manchester also depends on handing Michael Carrick the permanent head coaching position. With just four games left of the 2025/26 season, decisions made this summer at Old Trafford could define whether United return to contending for the biggest titles.
