Broncos Icon Alex Glenn Forced to Clarify Social Media Activity Amid Coaching Controversy

Brisbane Broncos legend Alex Glenn has found himself embroiled in an unexpected social media storm after liking a controversial post by Fox League that appeared to criticise the club's head coach, Michael Maguire. The former New Zealand international, who made 288 appearances for the Broncos during his illustrious career, has been compelled to publicly defend his actions and reaffirm his support for the premiership-winning coach.

The Controversial Post and Mark Geyer's Comments

The controversy stems from a Fox League Instagram post that referenced comments made by former Penrith Panthers player Mark Geyer during an appearance on 2GB's The Continuous Call Team show. Geyer had questioned Maguire's coaching methods, suggesting the coach's intense reputation was becoming problematic.

'What I do keep hearing a lot is Madge's name being mentioned... I'm not gonna say [in] unfriendly [ways], but not in positive ways,' Geyer stated during the radio broadcast. He further elaborated: 'That makes me think that someone like Michael Maguire has a shelf life as a coach in the NRL of around three years, because he is so intense.'

The Fox League post featured a picture of Maguire during a press conference with a caption reading: 'Pressure is beginning to build around Broncos coach Michael Maguire. Will we see Brisbane go back-to-back this year?'

Glenn's Immediate Response and Clarification

Glenn, who currently works for the Broncos as a matchday host and recently led a fan tour to England for the World Club Challenge match against Hull KR, swiftly denied any criticism of Maguire. The 37-year-old issued a statement through the Broncos organisation addressing the situation directly.

'Any suggestion that I was expressing negativity towards Madge is an absolute joke and completely unfounded,' Glenn declared emphatically. He provided specific clarification about his social media interaction: 'I am a massive advocate for Madge and only liked the post because it asked the specific question, "Will we see Brisbane go back-to-back this year?" I liked the post only to affirm my support on that specific point.'

The former Broncos captain, who retired in 2021, added: 'All our fans know that no one cheers harder for Madge and the Broncos than I do.'

Doubling Down on Social Media

Not content with his initial statement, Glenn took to his own Instagram account to further address the controversy in a video published on Tuesday. He directly challenged those attempting to create division between him and the club.

'If you're getting so wound up about all this little stuff and trying to create a divide around myself and the club, you're looking in the wrong space,' Glenn asserted. 'Everyone knows I support Madge and have always loved that he was coming to this club because hard work always beats talent.'

Glenn specifically addressed the narrative around Maguire's coaching intensity: 'What I mean by that, is if you're having a cry or whinge about getting trained too hard, which is not the players complaining, it's all the media outlets trying to create a story.'

Defending Professional Standards

The Broncos great offered a passionate defence of the hard work required at professional level, drawing from his own extensive experience in the NRL. 'If you're whinging about training too hard in the professional realm, then you're in the wrong industry, clearly,' Glenn stated. 'For me, there's no complaining about hard work. You've got to train your arse off in order to be champions and the boys were proving that last year, they were 2025 champions for a reason.'

He concluded his social media message with a firm declaration of unity: 'Don't go out trying to create a divide between the club and me, between Madge and me, because it ain't going to work. I support him through and through.'

Maguire's Broncos Success and Upcoming Challenge

The controversy comes as Maguire prepares for his second season in charge of the Broncos, having taken over from Kevin Walters in 2024. In his debut season, Maguire coached Brisbane to premiership success, ending the club's 19-year wait for a title and immediately establishing himself as a fan favourite.

Brisbane will begin their 2026 title defence with a challenging opening round clash against the Penrith Panthers, a repeat of last year's NRL preliminary final. The match represents an early test of whether the Broncos can achieve the back-to-back success referenced in the controversial social media post that sparked this entire controversy.

As the new NRL season approaches, Glenn's public support for Maguire and his clarification of the social media incident have highlighted the intense scrutiny facing successful sporting organisations and the potential for minor online interactions to generate significant media attention.
