Two British tourists have been arrested in Majorca on suspicion of raping a fellow British man in a hotel room. The alleged assault occurred in the resort town of Calas de Mallorca on the south-east coast of the island.
The two suspects, both aged 36, were arrested at their own hotel and appeared in court on Saturday. Spanish media reported that they were released pending further investigation. The victim met the pair through the dating app Grindr, and after spending time drinking at the hotel pool, the three men went to the suspects' room.
According to the National Police, the victim had made it clear he was only seeking company, not sex, but the situation changed once they were inside the room. He suffered injuries and was taken to hospital, where he reported the incident. Police said he had recorded a conversation on his phone, which he handed over as evidence.
A National Police spokesperson stated: 'Despite distancing himself from it, he ended up being allegedly sexually assaulted, suffering injuries and having to go to a hospital. An investigation began that concluded with the arrest of the two men as alleged perpetrators of a crime of sexual assault.'
The court hearing took place behind closed doors, as is standard practice in Spain for pre-trial proceedings. The investigation continues.
