Aden Durde, defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, is set to make history as the first British coach to appear in a Super Bowl when his team faces the New England Patriots on Sunday. The 46-year-old from north London has been instrumental in transforming Seattle's defence from 30th overall in 2023 to a league-best unit that allowed just 17.2 points per game this season.
Durde's journey to the NFL's biggest stage began in Middlesex, where he grew up a West Ham fan but became obsessed with American football after watching the Chicago Bears win the 1985 Super Bowl. He played linebacker for the London Olympians in the British American Football League before moving to NFL Europe with the Hamburg Sea Devils. A brief stint with the Carolina Panthers via the NFL International Development Practice Squad was cut short after a positive drugs test, but he later spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad.
After retiring as a player, Durde turned to coaching. He joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2023 as defensive coordinator alongside head coach Mike Macdonald. The pair have built a fierce defence, drawing comparisons to the 'Legion of Boom' of the mid-2010s. Macdonald praised Durde's perspective, saying, 'Just listening to him talk about how he sees the game was very similar to how I saw it.'
Seahawks players have embraced Durde's accent and intensity. Cornerback Devon Witherspoon called it 'pretty dope', while safety Coby Bryant, who attempted to mimic Durde's accent, described him as 'the ultimate competitor'. Durde himself said, 'I fell in love with football. One day me and a kid down my street decided we wanted to play so we did.'
Durde is determined to ensure he is not the last British coach in the Super Bowl. His path—from playing in the UK to coordinating an elite NFL defence—serves as an inspiration for aspiring coaches across the Atlantic.
