Manchester United have lost six of their opening 12 home league games for the first time since 1893, after a 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford. Ruben Amorim, the United head coach, described his side as 'the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United'. The result leaves United in 13th place in the Premier League, having won just two of their last nine league matches.
Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georgino Rutter scored for Brighton, who became only the second team after Manchester City to win three consecutive Premier League away games at Old Trafford. United's only goal came from a Bruno Fernandes penalty after Joshua Zirkzee was fouled by Carlos Baleba. Amad Diallo was the only United player to escape criticism from Amorim.
Amorim, who has taken just 11 points from his 11 games in charge, acknowledged his record is worse than his predecessor Erik ten Hag. 'You are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. Imagine that,' he said. 'We need to survive this moment.' The defeat was compounded by errors from goalkeeper Andre Onana, who has now made 10 errors leading to goals in his Premier League career.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler described the win as 'a special moment'. United had earlier paid tribute to former player Denis Law, who died last week, with a minute's applause and a wreath laid by three 1968 European Cup winners. But the tributes could not prevent another dismal home performance.
