Big Break Returns: Hendry and McGuinness to Host BBC Reboot

The BBC is bringing back the classic television gameshow Big Break after a 24-year hiatus, with seven-time snooker world champion Stephen Hendry and presenter-comedian Paddy McGuinness set to co-host the rebooted series.

Original Show Legacy

The original Big Break ran for 10 series from 1991 to 2002, becoming a Saturday evening staple on BBC One. It featured the late John Virgo performing trick-shot challenges and Jim Davidson as host. The memorable theme tune will also return for the new version.

New Format Details

The BBC describes the revived show as a “reimagined” concept for modern audiences, blending “fast-paced snooker frames with a relaxed, comedic atmosphere.” Each of the 20 half-hour episodes will see three contestants, assisted by professional snooker players, competing for cash prizes.

Hendry, 57, will take on the trick-shot duties previously handled by Virgo, while McGuinness steps into Davidson’s role as host. The series has been commissioned by BBC Daytime and Early Peak for broadcast on BBC Two and iPlayer.

Stars React

Hendry said: “Big Break was a unique mix of trick shots and great entertainment and I can’t wait to be back at the table and bringing this incredible show to a whole new audience and who knows, we might inspire the next generation of snooker players to get into the sport.”

McGuinness, known for Phoenix Nights, Take Me Out and Top Gear, added: “I am absolutely delighted to be a part of Big Break. It is one of those shows everyone knows and loves so to be hosting it alongside legend Stephen Hendry will be something special. Bring it on!”

Revival Trend

The return of Big Break follows the BBC’s successful revival of another 1990s family favourite, Gladiators. ITV has also recently brought back the darts gameshow Bullseye.
